Communities and Local People
The Widlife Trust is proud of its work with local communities across Birmingham and the Black Country. Here are some examples of how we team up with local people to help them take action to look after their local environment:
ATHAC - Winson Green, Birmingham
Access to Heritage Art and Culture is a diverse local support group, which aims to empower parents to work in partnership with like minded organisations to develop inclusive artistic, cultural and leisure opportunities for children who have a range of disabilities. We aim to provide supported access for families by introducing them to new cultural experiences that challenge, engage and raise the aspirations of both children and parents.
ATHAC has worked over the last two years in partnership with The Peak District National Park Rangers and Centre of the Earth to widen family’s awareness of the environment and living in sustainable ways.
Neighbourhood Nature
Neighbourhood Nature is all about finding ways to strengthen the links between local communities and the green spaces and wildlife sites in their local area. The current Neighbourhood Nature project works in Blakenall, Walsall, but earlier projects have worked with communities in Pleck, Caldmore, Leamore and South Birmingham.
Friends of Local Nature Reserves

Special Interest Groups
Several special interest groups working across Birmingham and the Black Country are helped and supported by the Wildlife Trust. They include:
- BRUMBATS - the Birmingham and Black Country Bat Group.
- Birmingham and Black Country Badger Group
- Birmingham and Black Country Flora Recording Group
- Birmingham and Black Country Mammal Group
- Birmingham and Black Country Invertebrate Group
- Herp Conservation
Birmingham Parks Project
The Birmingham Parks Project was an exciting initiative to improve green spaces in west Birmingham, especially public parks. Detailed consultation was carried out with local people and users before a whole range of improvement works were carried out. Best of all, research carried out by the project showed a measurable change for the better in how people used the parks after environmental improvements were carried out.
